The effects of ethnicity, race and skin colour on Latin American Inequality
September 2016-September 2019
Inequality is one of the most relevant issues for Latin American societies. Typically, scholars explain this problem by arguing that it is a consequence of inherited disadvantages from the colonial period as well as reduced channels for social mobility. Thus, despite Latin American racial diversity, it is assumed that race nor ethnicity has a substantial impact on that problem. The aim of this thesis is to show that race, through skin colour, is an essential factor for explaining such inequalities. Furthermore, as a second objective, this thesis pretends to illustrate the relevance of some contextual factors, such as the history of racial relations and ethnoracial fractionalization, to understand variations of skin colour effect across Latin American societies.
Before joining the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research (CMI), I worked as the academic coordinator for the Equality Institute (the Think Tank of the Socialist Party of Chile) from 2008 to 2010. Then, from 2011 to 2014, I was an associate lecturer at the Catholic University of Temuco (Chile). There, I taught Sociology of Organisations, Social Theory, and Political Sociology. My research experience includes political and electoral studies, as well as racial stereotyping and social stratification.
I graduated from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile with a degree in Sociology in 2010. In 2014, I was awarded a CONICYT-BECAS CHILE 1+3 studentship. After completing the MSc in Social Research Methods and Statistics at The Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research, I started my PhD in Applied Social Research in 2016.
